As part of the flagship development in 1999, we had designed offices around the store atrium.
The top floor was rented out and Paperchase took the floor below. But as Paperchase expanded its business, it needed larger office provision.
In 2010 we were asked to incorporate the two floors into one flexible office space that would provide for interaction between departments and floors and, also, solve the problem of somewhere for the buyers to store their samples tidily.

This project represents our ‘adapt and develop’ ethos. All the doors and frames, glass screens, lighting, ceilings, flooring were recycled from within the building.
Placing the connecting staircase across the atrium meant that no precious working space was used up.
At first, there was resistance to the floating staircase because of some people’s fear of heights but now that it is built, it is the main link between the two office floors.
The view from the staircase, down to the retail floors is interesting, as is looking up at the staircase from below. It is an integral part of the flagship store design.
